Certification Training

The Occupational Health and Safety Act requires that most workplaces with 20 or more workers have at least one worker and one management person to serve as certified members of a workplace Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC). This certification involves training in health and safety law, and the identification, assessment and control of hazards.

Who must have a JHSC?
  • Workplaces that regularly employ 20 or more workers;
  • Construction projects on which 20 or more workers are regularly employed and which are expected to last three months or more:
  • Any workplace, other than a construction project, to which a regulation concerning a designated substance applies;
  • A workplace ordered to do so by the Minister of Labour.

Who must have certified members?
  • Workplaces that regularly employ 20 or more workers;
  • Construction projects on which 50 or more workers are regularly
  • employed and which are expected to last three months or more.

W.S.I.B. Certification Training - fully approved through the WSIB
Every Company that has a Safety Committee must ensure that at least 2 members have been certified to comply with Section 9 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Safety Connection offers a 3 day program which has been approved by the W.S.I.B. In addition, we offer ongoing support to our participants to ensure that they attain certification accreditation.


Safety Committee Training - half day
A Safety Committee Member, to function in accordance with Occupational Health And Safety Act, Section 9 should have the knowledge and experience to Chair a meeting and prepare agendas and minutes to be reviewed by the Ministry of Labour Inspector.

This course outlines the functions of the Joint Health and Safety Committee member giving them the tools to become competent to carry out their duties in accordance with the Act. Also, this session explains the TERMS OF REFERENCE to the J.H.S.C. when and how to assist in a work refusal, role of the co-chair persons, preparing agendas, minutes, role of a J.H.S.C. member in case of a critical injury or fatality. This course includes videos, all materials and a certificate of achievement.
